What Moon Child talks about from collaboration in an era where you can make music alone
Ten years have passed since Moon Child made the album debut in 2012 in "Be Free." In the next work "PLEASE REWIND" in 2015, they attracted attention with their unique sound and quality, and they quickly became popular, "Voyager" (2017), "Little Ghost" (2019). And have been releasing wonderful works. Amber Navran, Max Brick, and Andris Matson are now pulling at festivals around the world, and they are on a busy world tour. [View images] Rolling Stone Magazine "500 songs in history" I have also covered three people several times so far, but it has always been strange about the moon child, which belongs to any place in any scene. It was not to see if it was. Formed at a jazz school at the University of Southern California, there is no doubt that LA is the base. He is also the undercard for the tour of Kamashi Washington, Stevie Wonder, the Internet, and Jill Scott. However, I couldn't see any more exchanges, and I had the impression of a solitary group. Such an image has changed dramatically in the latest work "StarFRUITS". Leila Hathaway, Alex Izley, Tank and the Bangus, Il Camille, Moomu Fresh, Chante Kang, Josh Johnson, and Rhapsody suddenly participate. In this collaboration -based album, their exchange relationships were seen at once. When I looked into it, Amber noticed that it was used in Rhapsody and Moomu Fresh, participating in Robert Glasper and Chris Dave, and had a lot of trouble. It may be said that the result of these various exchanges is "StarFRUITS". But on the other hand, despite the fact that there are so many unique guests, the musicality of StarFRUITS is the usual moon child. We take advantage of each character, but drag into their fields. I would like to hear about the solid style of Moonchild, which is not shaking at all, whether it is a corona evil, and the growth of the three, which will also be based on the flexibility to accept the other party, and the growth of the three. I thought. -In the previous interview, he said, "I'm always writing songs, and when I have some songs, I will collect songs that have been created before and think about what to do with the concept." There are many guests in this work, songs with guests and songs without guests are alternately lined up, and I feel stronger depending on the composition. I wondered if the way of working was different from the previous album, how about? Amber: No, I think it was close to how to make it so far. About a month, about one beat a day, three people made at the same time, and many of the songs included in the album were born from the process. So, when the song became a little shape, I decided to decide which song to send and who to feature. Andris: Almost agreed. In other words, each part brings the individual made. Then, the pandemic had the opportunity to call out because everyone who wanted to work together was at home and had time. Amber: If the global pandemic did not happen, I think it would never have come true. Because they are busy and they often do tours and live performances. It might have been an unexpected benefit. -So, please tell us the concept of "StarFRUIT". Amber: One thing has been a band for 10 years, so the guests have met in festivals and have met while working as a moon child. Is that the main concept? The 10th anniversary, all the impacts that I have received, the skills I have learned, and those I have met so far. There are various concepts in the lyrics, but I guess that's the case when it comes to music. -What would you like to mention "StarFRUIT"? Andris: For example, "Love I Need" is greatly affected by the sounds of Sly Stone and Diangelo. Amber: "You Got One" is a song inspired by the sound of the phone, and "Don't Hurry Home" is a flute sample ... Max: We've inspired while playing with the new sound. Andris: I'm quite addicted to mixing acoustic things such as guitars and ukulele and electronic drum sounds. When I heard that Bon -Evert or other artists doing that, I thought it was cool and decided to try it. -What about "StarFRUIT" is an inspiration other than music? Amber: I read poems a lot, and I write down the concept, structure, and phrases I sympathize with in my notebook. So you may decide on one topic you want to write, turn the notebook, get inspired from there, and explore the direction. But I sometimes get hints from everything else, personal experience, and people close to people, and I think that life is affecting lyrics. For example, "What You Wanted" is a song about tour experience, and even if it gets harder, this is a content that you don't forget what you want (laughs). -I think Amber has always talked about female poets and writers for a long time, but there is also inspiration from words in this work. Amber: Of course. I'm looking at my bookshelf right now, but I'm a poet, Neira Wahed ( * 1) and Ilsa Daily Ward ( * 2). Also, Percival Everett ... Tank and the Bangus tanks (Tanka "Tank" Ball: Vo) also publish a collection of poems, and I really like her poetry. I always check poetry, but I don't like to extract the phrases and use it, I read and read the songs, and the details are just a line, and what does it finally mean? I want to read the poem that I understand, and I want to do it with the song! I think. At first, I don't know what it is until it becomes rusted only with detailed details. Therefore, it is influenced by the structure. * 1 Nayyirah Waheed: "The most famous poet in Instagram" that handles love, identity, race, feminism. Her identity or background has not been revealed. * 2 YRSA DALEY-WARD: A writer / model / actor born in Lankasher in 1988. She publishes several books, including "The Terrible" (2018). She is also involved in Beyonce "BLACK IS KING" and "The Lion King: The Gift". Andris: Did you do it on "What you wanted"? Amber: That's right. I also like Maya Angelow (as an American black female writer / poet, civil rights activist). I think it's really interesting to think about words, and the words of those who have all words are very inspiring. By learning words, all of my hearts and souls are putting words into creative words. I think many lyricists and rapper do the same. Of course, I get stimulated from music, but sometimes it's interesting to shift to people who don't have to use words, thinking about making music and songs, making it easier to sing. think. -The returned to the sound side, we talked about new equipment and plugins in the previous work "Little Ghost" in 2019, how about this time? Andris: I always buy new toys (laughs). This time, I tried a lot of vocal effects, and Amber used octave pedals. Amber: I used some octave -based systems, and recently I have used a lot of Serato Sample. Then our drummer EFA ETOROMA JR.There is a drum pack that is put out, and I try to make a beat using only his sound. I use some of the drum packs now. Max: Also, this work also uses a new string plug -in. If you use it as a texture only for a single note, it feels good. I can't hire a real string quartet (laughs). After that, I tried using the harmonized clarinet that I haven't used so far. Andris: For the first time this time, Max sampled Amber's voice. Max: Yeah, I use "TAKES TWO" of the litter ghost. -In "Little Ghost", it was fresh that Andris used Akogi and ukulele, but what are the challenges for musical instruments this time? Andris: I feel like I'm continuing from the previous work, but I tried how to use instruments and how to combine it before. For example, at the end of "BY NOW", Fleugelhorn and Amber vocal and electric guitar take over the code. And, as I said, Max uses a clarinet or hasn't featured so much in the past. Amber: (Andris) is showing a pretty cool guitar truck this time (laughs). Andris: Hahaha. There was a pretty funky truck, so I felt like I moved my finger with ideas in my head. I'm glad I was able to record as many times as I want. Max: In "Little Ghost", I used the full -length Akogi, but this time there were many electric. That's also different.
