Yves Gastou and his men's ring collectionYves Gastou took his name from the gallery he opened in the rue Bonaparte in Paris in the mid-1980s, which quickly expanded into the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. It became widely known by becoming a famous spot representing . A pioneering antique dealer, Gustou was one of the first generation to display French and Italian furniture from the 1940s to the 1970s alongside iconic 1980s designs by Sottsass, Mendini and Shiro Kuramata. was. Gustou's career, which spans over 40 years and has pioneered the art market, makes him a true pioneer. At the heart of his talent lies an extraordinary visual intellect, nurtured from childhood by an auctioneer father and an aesthetic mother who taught him the beauty of the world; He had the charisma inherent in his upbringing, the inexhaustible passion and energy that comes with it.Yves Gastou and his son Victor Gastou © Gallery Yves Gastou
Gastou's extraordinary collection of men's rings was kept secret until 2018, when it was exhibited at L'Ecole in Paris. The exhibition aims to reveal a little-known side of his life as a collector, so well-known as a dealer. For more than 30 years, Mr. Gustou has been a treasure hunter, not only on the usual roads (flea markets, public auctions, jeweler's and workshop inventories, etc.), but also traveling here and there, collecting works, enthusiastically and risk-taking. I built up a collection as I went along. From the birth of a child to the vows of love, the collection is like an endless book of personal confessions, reflecting the journey of Mr. Gustou and snippets of his intimate and affectionate life. Men's Ring ExhibitionAfter Paris, L'Ecole's touring exhibition in Tokyo and Hong Kong showcases some of the collection's most iconic pieces. Each of the displayed selections of rings represents one of the five themes that characterize the collection and represent its diversity: History, Gothic, Christian Mysticism, Vanitas, and Broad Collection. increase. Each ring contains the collector's background and the story that evokes him, becoming his identity, like the many small parts that make up who he is. The exhibition aims to tell the story of a life dedicated to art and a deep love for objects, an anecdote that reveals how Mr. Gustou works in his secret hideout. Gastou's spatial production, which beautifully expresses the gothic and mysterious world, is inspired by his childhood spent in the Aude region of France, where he originated. The colors chosen reflect not only the style of cathedrals, but also the more general image of churches from the Middle Ages to the 1950s, the catacombs of saints and knights, the intricate splendor of fragrant services and the organ. Think of the sounds, the acolytes in embroidered vestments, the sumptuous cloths worn by cardinals, bishops and popes in the films Fellini's Rome and the television series Young Pope. It gives off an atmosphere of letting go. The collection, which is unprecedented in its dedication to men's rings, has been released to the public outside of L'Ecole, in response to the current tendency to associate jewelery with the feminine. There is no such thing. The expression is baroque, reminding us that, as Baudelaire said, "the beautiful is always the eccentric." There are connotations such as rock'n'roll and flamboyant vanity, glittering jewels, the richness and wastefulness of jeweler's craftsmanship, and the mysterious and infinite symbol that is enriched by merging with the reflection of the sun and moon.
