"3 meals a day" The risk of aging secretly approaching those who eat What you can do now to get older healthy
You don't even need 3 meals a day
──What kind of life do you actually live if you are familiar with aging?
Nowadays, we are paying more and more attention to our health. When I was in my twenties, I used to go on an "Okinawa diet" to reduce the amount of food I eat. At that time, I was young, so I didn't continue (laughs). Now I have two meals a day and I don't have breakfast. Recently, I often don't have lunch, and even if I eat it, it's only low-calorie food.
──In Japan, it is taught that three meals a day is the basis of health. Does it mean that eating less is good for your health?
The only advice that everyone can practice is to eat less often. You don't even need three meals a day. The sirtuin gene, a longevity gene, is not activated unless you are hungry and thin. Exercise switches on that gene. You have to get your body out of "complacency". In medical terms, it is called "hormesis" (hormesis: showing a stimulating effect at a concentration that does not poison the body), but it becomes stronger when stimulated to the extent that it does not kill the body.
