In promoting telework, there are probably more than a few people who have developed a wireless LAN environment in their homes. Under these circumstances, the wireless LAN standard that deserves attention is “IEEE802.11ax (also known as Wi-Fi 6)”. It can be said that the goal of this new communication standard, which has already been commercialized in many products, is "high performance in a dense environment." In this article, we will summarize in an easy-to-understand manner the benefits that users can enjoy from IEEE802.11ax/Wi-Fi 6 and expected use cases.

＜目次＞新型コロナの影響も後押しし、リモートワークやオンライン学習が当たり前となり、これまでmobileアクセスさえあればいいといった風潮からネット回線へと大きな揺り戻しが来ている。そして、自宅の固定回線を家族でシェアするために必須となるのが無線LANだ。そんな中、さまざまなモノがインターネットにつながるIoT時代のインフラとして5G（第5世代移動通信システム）とともに期待されているのが無線LANの標準規格「IEEE802.11ax」である。本規格、2020年内にも標準化が完了する（承認される）見通しとなっている。まず最初に、用語の整理をしておきたい。IEEE802.11axは、電気・情報工学の各種技術の標準化を担う国際機関「IEEE」が策定する無線LAN規格だ。後述するが、ベースとなる「IEEE802.11」を拡張するものという位置づけだ。なお、以下ではIEEEは省略して記述する。無線LANの通称としては「Wi-Fi」のほうが広く用いられている。利用する分には、ほぼイコールと思っても大差はないが、厳密にはWi-Fiという表記は、無線LAN製品の普及を担う業界団体「Wi-Fi Alliance」が用いる規格・認定プログラム（Wi-Fiのロゴを製品に記載するにはこの認定プログラムにパスする必要がある）のブランドのこと。802.11シリーズに準拠し、その他802.11には含まれない、暗号通信や認証など周辺技術も含めた包括的な規格になる。| 802.11規格とWi-Fiの認証プログラムのバージョン | ||||
